Nevada Day 2026 in Carson City: Your Curry Street Guide

October 8, 2026

This year Nevada's birthday and Halloween are the same day, Saturday, Oct. 31. The Nevada Day Parade steps off that morning. Carson City is handling the overlap by splitting the weekend in two. Halloween moves to Friday night. Saturday stays with the state.

The split also happens on the map. Carson Street still holds the parade. Most of the new or relocated events this year are a short walk away on Curry Street. If you plan Saturday around Curry, the day gets easier.

Halloween Comes A Day Early

The date change went through city government. The Carson City Board of Supervisors' agenda for June 18, 2026 included a resolution to move Halloween activities to Friday, Oct. 30, so they wouldn't land on the Saturday Nevada Day events. City Manager Glen Martel was listed as the staff contact. According to the Nevada Appeal, the city has moved trick-or-treating before when the dates collided, to keep children away from parade-day crowds. The paper says the next collision comes in 2037.

Visit Carson City's weekend itinerary, updated Oct. 1, lists community trick-or-treating on Friday, Oct. 30, "so Nevada Day and Halloween can each have their moment."

Friday evening has two parts:

  1. Downtown Candy Crawl, 5 to 6:30 p.m. Families follow a map of participating downtown businesses and trick-or-treat from stop to stop. Member businesses of the Carson City Downtown Business Association organize and sponsor the free crawl. The association says it releases the map the day before, which this year is Thursday, Oct. 29. The 2026 list of participating businesses hasn't been published yet, so check the map for this year's stops.
  2. Historic West Side trick-or-treating, after the crawl. The itinerary points families to the Governor's Mansion as a starting point. It suggests parking once and walking, since the neighborhood streets get busy around the mansion.

Friday is also the official Nevada Day holiday. The Nevada Day Powwow at the MAC, 1860 Russell Way, holds its first Grand Entry at 7 p.m. that evening. Admission is free. With trick-or-treating on Friday, Saturday is free for the parade and everything around it.

Saturday Starts On Curry Street, Not Carson

The clearest change shows up before the parade. The Nevada Day Classic 8K and 2-mile run/walk is organized by Tahoe Mountain Milers, and its proceeds benefit Guide Dogs for the Blind. This year the race can't use Carson Street at all. The registration page says so in capital letters and adds that "our future permitting relies on following this rule." Both races now start and finish on Curry Street at McFadden Square, and the finish straightaway runs down Curry.

The rest of the race-day details:

  • Packet pickup and race-day registration open at 6:45 a.m. at McFadden Square.
  • The 8K starts at 8 a.m. and the 2-mile at 8:10 a.m. Organizers say the staggered start eases crowding at the line and where the two courses split.
  • The field is capped at 550 runners, and dogs aren't allowed on the course under this year's permit.
  • The 8K leaves Curry at Robinson, climbs through Mountain and Winnie to Ash Canyon Road, follows Ormsby to King, then comes back by way of Minnesota and 10th Street to the Curry finish. The 2-mile loops William, Minnesota and 10th.

Once the runners finish, other Curry Street events start up. The Kids Market & Adventure Zone is new this year. It runs 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Third Street parking lot at 200 S. Curry St., just off the parade route. Entry is free, and so is the pumpkin-painting contest. Young entrepreneurs run their own booths. A $10 activity wristband covers face painting, the Game On Gaming Truck and Sing Van pop-up karaoke, and wristband sales support the Nevada Day Parade.

A few blocks north, the World Championship Single Jack Drilling Contest is listed for 10:30 a.m. on Curry Street near the Nevada Day Gift Shop at 508 N. Curry St. In the afternoon, the beard contest is set for McFadden Plaza.

Parking also points to Curry. Visit Carson City says parade-day parking is free on side streets west of Curry and east of Plaza and Stewart streets, and there is no parking on Carson Street.

Carson Street Keeps The Parade

The parade itself hasn't moved. It starts at 10 a.m. at William and North Carson streets and runs south to Stewart and South Carson. Visit Carson City estimates it takes about three hours. Since the run and the Kids Market are now on Curry, Carson Street stays clear for the parade and the crowds watching it.

The 2026 theme is "Pumpkins, Pioneers and Tall Tales." Steven Saylor is Grand Marshal, and Bobby Bean is named Legacy Grand Marshal. With the parade on Halloween, Nevada Day Inc. added a Pumpkin Decorating Contest with cash prizes this year. The Parade Decorating Contest returns as well. Nevada Day Inc. has a new mascot, Echo the Silver State Coyote, and spectators can vote for a crowd-favorite parade entry.

The north end of the route needs one more check. The city's East William Street project is scheduled to keep going through fall 2026. Repaving from Carson Street to Roop Street finished in June. The city's Oct. 1 update only covers single-lane traffic each way for the week of Oct. 5. No official 2026 parade-day closure schedule had been posted when this was written. If you're coming from the east side, look at the city road report in the last week of October before choosing your route to the William Street end.

Where Saturday Goes After The Floats

When the parade ends, the day moves west and spreads out. The Post-Parade Telegraph & Proctor Celebration runs 3 to 6 p.m. at Telegraph Square and West Proctor Street. It's free and has live music, food and drink vendors, children's activities and a beer garden. Nevada Day Inc.'s schedule also lists two other post-parade events. The Foreman-Roberts House Museum holds an open house from 3 to 5 p.m. with docents in costume. The Capital City Community Band plays a concert at the Legislative Amphitheater.

The Nevada Day Chili Feed in the Carson Nugget's Sierra Room is free, but tickets are limited. They're handed out at the Winners Club starting at 10 a.m., so you may need to leave the parade early to get one.

Both state museums have events that day:

  • The Nevada State Railroad Museum runs V&T Locomotive No. 25 train rides from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Oct. 31, with more rides Friday and Sunday.
  • The Nevada State Museum holds Coin Press No. 1 demonstrations from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.

On Saturday evening, the Powwow at the MAC holds Grand Entries at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Its last session is Sunday at noon. If you'd like to dress up after all, Virginia City's Nevada Statehood Ball at Piper's Opera House runs 7 to 10 p.m. This year it's a Victorian Fancy Dress Masquerade with music by Renegade Orchestra. Gardnerville photographer Eye of Rie is taking tintype portraits.

Check times before Oct. 31. Nevada Day Inc.'s planning page and its full schedule don't agree on a few details. One lists the beard contest at 1 p.m., the drilling contest at Carson Mall and the after-party from 5 to 8 p.m. The other lists 2 p.m., Curry Street and 3 to 6 p.m. This post uses the times on the full schedule and the Visit Carson City itinerary, and Visit Carson City labels its listings tentative.

The race-day limits will probably last beyond this year. The Classic's organizers wrote that future permits depend on keeping runners off Carson Street. Curry Street is likely to carry more of Nevada Day morning going forward.

Many of us at The Agency Reno spend parade morning on these same blocks between William and Stewart. If you're curious which Carson City streets are a short walk from the Curry Street events and the West Side's Friday trick-or-treat route, Contact Us and we'll talk it through.
