Most Augusts in the capital give you two separate music habits. There is the Saturday night at the Brewery Arts Center, and there is the jazz festival that shows up in the middle of the month. This year the two overlap in a way the calendar pages do not quite spell out, and if you plan the second half of August as a single stretch instead of two unrelated events, you can hear ten nights of live music in ten different rooms without leaving Carson City.
That is the argument of this piece. Not that there is a lot going on. That the calendar has a hidden shape, and the shape is the whole point.
The Overlap Nobody Prints on One Page
The Levitt AMP Carson City Music Series runs free Saturday concerts at the Brewery Arts Center from June 20 through August 29. The 23rd annual Jazz & Beyond Festival runs Friday August 14 through Sunday August 23, presented by the Mile High Jazz Band Association across roughly a dozen venues. Between August 14 and 23, both series are live at once. Plein Air Carson City runs August 18 through 23 on top of that. Add the Downtown Wine Walk on Friday August 14 and the Saturday farmers market at Mills Park, and the middle ten days of August are the densest cultural window Carson City puts on any calendar.
Here is what that overlap actually looks like once you lay the two series side by side.

That is eight distinct nights of programming in ten days, in eight different venues. Nothing else Carson City puts on a schedule reads like this.
The Saturday Anchor at 449 W. King
The Brewery Arts Center is the fixed point. Since 2016 the BAC has produced ten free concerts a summer under a matching grant from the Levitt Family Foundation, and 2026 marks the 10th anniversary of the series, with the year's programming built around the most requested crowd favorites of the past decade. That is why the August lineup reads like a greatest-hits ballot rather than an emerging-artist showcase.
The August Saturdays run Aug 1 Van Goat, Aug 8 Jakota Wass, Aug 15 Jelly Bread, Aug 22 Young Dubliners, and Aug 29 Mumbo Gumbo. Jakota Wass is a Carson Valley country singer, which makes the August 8 show the closest thing the series has to a hometown night. Jelly Bread is a Reno-based alt-rock and funk band the BAC has hosted before and brought back by request. The Young Dubliners on August 22 are the Celtic rock draw of the summer, and Mumbo Gumbo closes the season on August 29 with a Gulf Coast blend the band has been touring for more than thirty years.
The mechanics are easy to forget between visits. Each concert starts at 7 p.m. with an opening act, the headliner takes the outdoor stage at 8 p.m., and attendees are invited to bring well-behaved pets on leashes, coolers and lawn chairs. The stage is at 449 W. King Street, food trucks work the lawn, and the whole thing is walkable from the Kit Carson Trail loop.
Jazz & Beyond, Read as a Neighborhood Tour
The trick with Jazz & Beyond is that it is not really a festival in the fenced-off, one-lawn sense. It is a ten-day route through Carson City's historic buildings and public plazas, and the venues do more work than the lineups do.
The opener on Friday August 14 is outdoors at the Governor's Mansion with the Reno Jazz Orchestra led by music director and arranger Greg Johnson. That sets the tone. From there the festival moves through a country-themed afternoon at the Silver Saddle Ranch on Sunday August 16 with music, cowboy poetry and mule rides, followed by the Latin-jazz ensemble No Comprende on Tuesday August 18 at McFadden Plaza, Lucky Diamond and the Incontinentals plus Cherie and John Shipley's Take This on Wednesday August 19 at the Bliss Mansion, the Mile High Jazz Band's Basie's Birthday concert on Friday August 21, and the all-female big band Sapphire Jazz Ensemble on Sunday August 23.
Read that as a map. Governor's Mansion is on Mountain Street. Bliss Mansion is a block off Robinson. McFadden Plaza is downtown at the corner of Third and Curry. Silver Saddle Ranch is southeast of town along the Carson River. The programming pulls a resident through parts of the city they probably drive past without stopping, and it does it in the one week of the year the weather cooperates for outdoor sets after 7 p.m.
The festival offers 10 days of mostly free entertainment and more than 30 performances, which is more than any single evening can absorb. The residents who get the most out of it pick two or three venues rather than trying to catch a set every night.
The Quieter Overlays
Two other things run underneath the music that week.
Plein Air Carson City runs August 18 through 23 out of the Brewery Arts Center, and the BAC has opened it up this year to multiple media beyond paint. That means painters and photographers working outdoors in the same neighborhoods the festival is routing through, which is a coincidence worth using. Walking through McFadden Plaza on Tuesday afternoon before the No Comprende set puts you in the middle of both.
The August Wine Walk is Friday August 14 at 4 p.m. downtown, which lines up cleanly with the festival opener across town at 4:30. Pick one. And the Carson Farmers Market runs Saturday mornings at the Marv Teixeira Pavilion in Mills Park from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. through September 26, which is the low-effort way to start a Levitt Saturday. The Carson Craft and Rummage Fair takes over Fuji Park across from Costco on Saturday August 8 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. if that is your week.
Where to Eat Between Sets
Three of Carson City's newer dinner options opened in the last year and change the calculus of a music night.
Nam Vietnamese Kitchen opened last November at 1442 E. William Street, suite 2, across from Mills Park and immediately east of Starbucks, which puts it a five-minute drive from the Brewery Arts Center and even closer to any morning at the farmers market. Owner Liem Le ran Pho Restaurant in Reno until 2023 before finding the Carson space, and the menu leans on pho, banh mi, flame-broiled barbecue and a shaking beef that has been drawing crowds since opening week.

Falafel Fresh moved into brick and mortar this June. The Mediterranean spot offers chicken shawarma, falafel wraps and more, opening in the former Don Chepe location inside the Carson Mall, after years of operating as a food truck under the same name. It is the fastest pre-show option south of William Street.
For a longer sit-down, Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint at 1500 Old Hot Springs Road is the reliable Tuesday through Saturday choice, closed Sundays and Mondays, and worth calling ahead for parties of four or more. And on the far south end, Mountain Mike's Pizza opened this spring at 3817 S. Carson Street in the pad next to Aspen Dental, in what used to be Buffalo Wild Wings. It is the eighth Mountain Mike's in Nevada.
The Way to Play It
If you have not tried to run August this way before, the low-friction version is three nights. Friday August 14 at the Governor's Mansion, Saturday August 22 for Young Dubliners at the Brewery Arts Center, and one Bliss Mansion or McFadden Plaza set in between. That gives you the opener, the closer weekend of the Levitt series, and one of the smaller festival rooms where the acoustics do the work.
The higher-commitment version is to circle August 14 through 23 on the fridge, pick two or three venues you have never been inside, and let the music do the routing. Carson City puts more free live programming on the calendar in that ten-day window than any comparable month of the year, and the residents who treat it as one connected stretch rather than two calendar entries get a better summer for it.
